how do i measure grid voltage on a 12AX7?
or a 6X8 for that matter, the control grid. I swapped out a 12AX7 for a 6X8 with the half triode half pentode. http://www.kbapps.com/audio/schematics/tubeamps/fender/images/champaa764.gif
the pentode is in place of the 1/2 12AX7 just before the 6V6 where the "volume" connects to the grid. when I turn the Volume Control up the tube creates A LOT of feedback, i'm thinking there's too much voltage on it? perhaps Positive Voltage when the max should be 0 volts? I've been measuring the grid voltage with resepct to the cathode but whether or the volume resistor has at 0 or shorted to ground it still reads the same number, thanks anybody!
Measure the cathode voltage with respect to ground. that, with opposite polarity, is the grid voltage.
In other words, the grid voltage to ground is zero, Cathode voltage to ground is +1.7 volts from the schematic, which means the grid to cathode voltage is –1.7 volts.
Always remember that voltage is measured between two points.
Why did you change the parts? That is a major change and you can't expect the circuit to continue to operate. Go back to the original circuit unless you have a good reason.
Feedback? do you mean acoustic feedback? that has little to do with the amplifier.
